The Lumberton Police Department is investigating a possible murder after responding to a fatal house fire on Thursday evening.
Police Chief Danny Sullins; said: “preliminary investigation reveals that Janice Dill Sherwood, 71, is the victim of a homicide,” he said.
Police are working in conjunction with the State Fire Marshall and the Jefferson County Crime Lab to assist in processing the crime scene.
“Initially, the state fire marshal and the fire investigator indicated that the origin of the fire is still under investigation,” Lumberton Fire Chief Jeff McNeel said.
Later, what was thought to be an accident is now ruled a murder following the preliminary autopsy report.
Firefighters were called to a home on the 500 block of Horn Road shortly before 10 p.m. and quickly put the fire out.
It was then that the body of the woman was discovered. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
No one else was home at the time of the fire. Next of kin have been notified.
