State-ranked Newton drives past Silsbee

NEWTON – The Silsbee Tigers ran into a buzz saw in Week 2 of Texas High School Football, falling to the no. 1 ranked 3A Newton Eagles 56-14 on Friday at Singletary Stadium.
Silsbee looked to play neck-and-neck with the feisty Eagles, forcing a turnover on downs on Newton’s opening possession of the game.
The Tigers drove the short field and scored on a 1-yard run by QB Dralyn Taylor to give Silsbee a 7-0 lead in the first quarter at the 7:15 mark.
On Newton’s ensuing possession, Silsbee DB Cam White intercepted Eagles QB  Josh Foster at the Silsbee 4-yard line. However, the Tigers were forced to punt before Newton took advantage of the field position to score and pull within one of the Tigers 7-6 with 3:14 in the first quarter.
It was all Silsbee could do as Newton scored an additional 36 unanswered points to take a commanding 42-7 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Silsbee FB Dillon Tarver added another scored for the Tigers on a 1-yard buck with 11:08 in the game.
Newton tacked on two more TDs to end the game.
The Tigers finished with 248 yards rushing while Newton tallied with 510 yards of offense.
Silsbee (0-2) will play in its first home game of the season when it hosts the Nederland Bulldogs (2-0) on Friday at Tiger Stadium.
Nederland is coming off of wins over West Orange-Stark 19-18, and Beaumont United 33-14.
