A head-on collision on US 69 occurred on Thursday, April 20 around 1 p.m. That wreck took the life of a Lumberton woman, Betty Nichols, 81. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident just north of West Chance on US 69.
75-year-old Bennie Harold Cleveland, Sr. of Warren was identified as the driver of the pickup truck that was heading southbound. It was reported that he crossed the centerline of the highway, colliding with Nichols’ vehicle.
Cleveland passed away on Saturday following the wreck at Christus St. Elizabeth hospital.
Lumberton Police Chief Danny Sullins says these are the third and fourth fatalities that have occurred from vehicle crashes in Lumberton in less than two months. Back in March, Johnny Ray Segeada Sr. was killed in a one-vehicle collision and Ruby Coleman passed away after a wreck that occurred on March 5 at Wheeler and US 69.
