At 8:46 a.m. on Monday, November 21, the Lumberton Fire Department received a report of a fire in the area of the old MUD offices. Lumberton Police arrived on the scene first. Fire Chief Jeff McNeel said there was visible smoke coming from the one-story wood frame structure. The first fire engine began working on the fire and it was under control quickly. The search of the building to get the all-clear was the highest priority according to Chief McNeel. There were no occupants in the residence at the time of the fire and Chief McNeel says it appears to be accidental. There was heavy damage in the kitchen area and heavy smoke damage throughout the structure. Two fire engines, one tanker, two Chiefs, and 10 firefighters were involved in the effort to distinguish the fire. Red Cross has been notified for assistance.
