It was a cool cloudy Saturday morning; ideal conditions for the Run with the Pack 181- 5k and Kids Fun Run event on November 5 at LHS Stadium. Kathy DeMeritt, volunteer mom for Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts said they were looking at ways to help get recognition and support for the troop and pack so they could grow and continue to participate in more service projects.
The bigger picture was to show the boys how to turn a disaster into something wonderful. Camp Urland was hit by a tornado last year and the camp was severely damaged. Pack 181 helped with the clean-up of the camp. Some of the wood removed from the camp was made into medals and trophies for this race. DeMeritt said “It’s all about helping support the boys and encourage them to keep doing what they are doing. Encourage them to help their community, display respect and manners, always be helpful, and be thrifty. We could have spent a lot of money on awards and we didn’t. It was a minimal expense for these awards and they were made from recycled materials.”
They were able to get many sponsors and it became larger and had a bigger turnout than what was expected for this first annual race. According to DeMeritt, over 200 people registered for the race. “For a first year, I think it was a huge success and we couldn’t have done it without our sponsors and volunteers. We pulled together,” she said.
