Fall is around the corner, which means it’s time for pumpkin spice lattes oh, and football! Friday night lights are now in full swing for the Lumberton Raiders as they finally had the opportunity to play four complete quarters of full contact football. Head coach Chris Babin and his boys travelled out to Hamshire-Fannett for their last non-district matchup of the season against the Longhorns.
Throughout the first half of the game both the offense and defense were doing anything they so pleased. The defense was shutting down the Longhorns rushing game. After changing their game plan the Longhorns began to throw the ball more, and we were ready. Raiders defense came away with three turnovers in first two quarters alone-one fumble recovery and two interceptions, with big returns. The offensive unit was led once again by Senior Brett Mercantel. Mercantel was able to rush at will due to the great blocking by the offensive line, as well as pass from a solid pocket. Mercantel wasn’t the only one making big plays. Another huge touchdown came by the means of a HOW LONG rush by Senior Kain Dear.
Going into the locker room with a 31-0 lead one would think the head coach Chris Babin would be can register for this special night at www.lumberton.k12.tx.us. Those who have registered will receive free reserved seat admission for them and their family as well as recognition and a gift bag at half-time. “Back the Badge” decals will be passed out to fans and sticker badges will be given to small children. There will also be a donation collection for the 100 club of Southeast Texas. PNG law enforcement and first responders have also been invited to participate.
