The Silsbee Chamber of Commerce is gearing up to host the First Annual Village Creek Classic Canoe and Kayak Race that will be held this Saturday, August 20th. Competitive? According to Executive Director Kathryn Humphrey, who organized the event, it is, but it isn’t just about that. “There are two categories, a competitive race and a creek clean-up challenge,” Humphrey told the Ledger. But even in the clean-up race, there
will be a competitive edge. “Participants in the creek clean-up will be provided with bags. All trash will be weighed at the finish line where Republic Services with have their booth. The person with the most trash will receive an award,” said Humphrey. And of course the other category, the two and half mile RACE! “Participants for the race will be given a number and the first kayak or canoe to reach the destination will be announced as the winner.” She continued, “This fundraising event will begin at Hwy 327 and end at Baby Galvez. Parking is at the First Baptist Church in Silsbee and will include shuttles provided by Acadian EMS.” The race will begin at 9:00 AM. The entry fee is $50.00 per person or $75 Parent/Child if you are renting a boat and $40 per person if you bring your own. The amount includes lunch provided by Novrozsky’s and a t-shirt.
